La Liga will be represented by five teams in the upcoming season of the UEFA Champions League
Champions League Trophy UEFASimilar to the English Premier League, Spain's La Liga will have five teams competing in the UEFA Champions League next season. This opportunity arises from UEFA’s European Performance Spot (EPS), which grants two additional slots in the Champions League based on clubs' performances in European tournaments throughout the season.
Last year, UEFA modified the Champions League format, expanding the tournament to accommodate 36 teams starting next season. As part of this revised structure, the EPS system was implemented to recognize the top two leagues based on their clubs' overall performances in the Champions League, Europa League, and Conference League.
The Premier League has already secured one of the EPS positions. La Liga has now obtained the second EPS spot due to a series of results that improved Spain's UEFA coefficient ranking. Notably, Athletic Bilbao’s recent win and Lazio’s exit from the Europa League contributed to Spain's advancement over its nearest rivals in the rankings.
Consequently, five Spanish clubs will participate in the upcoming Champions League. Currently, Athletic Bilbao ranks fourth in La Liga with 57 points from 31 matches. Villarreal follows in fifth place with 51 points from 30 games, while Real Betis is sixth with 48 points from 31 matches. Celta Vigo is in seventh place with 43 points from 31 games.
Likewise, Italy and Germany have also benefited from the EPS this season. Bologna qualified despite finishing fifth in Serie A, and Borussia Dortmund achieved the same in the Bundesliga.
In the Premier League, the competition for fifth place is fierce. Newcastle United holds third place with 59 points from 32 matches, followed closely by Nottingham Forest with 57 points, Manchester United with 55 points, and Chelsea and Aston Villa, both tied at 54 points. If Arsenal, currently second with 63 points from 32 games, secures a top-four finish as anticipated, the Premier League could potentially send six teams to next season’s Champions League—four based on league standings, one through EPS, and another if either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur wins the Europa League.
UEFA determines coefficient rankings by evaluating club performance, awarding 2 points for a victory, 1 point for a draw, and extra bonus points in the Champions League. The overall points accumulated by a country's clubs are then divided by the number of clubs that participated to calculate the coefficient.
