It was intended to be a standard delivery — a brand-new Boeing 737 Max, adorned with the colors of XiamenAir, set to soar over China. Instead, it made its way back home.

On Saturday evening at 6:11 PM local time, the aircraft landed in Seattle, returning to U.S. territory. The flight that was meant to conclude in China was unexpectedly redirected, caught in the intensifying trade conflict between the United States and China — a dispute that continues to reverberate across global markets.

The plane, still displaying XiamenAir’s insignia and branding, had journeyed over 5,000 miles (8,000 kilometers), making refueling stops in Guam and Hawaii before reaching Boeing's facility. It was among several 737 Max jets that were in the final stages of preparation at Boeing’s Zhoushan center in China — until the political climate changed.

Earlier this month, former President Donald Trump enacted a new round of tariffs, imposing an astonishing 145% import tax on Chinese products. In response, China implemented a 125% tariff on U.S. imports, including aircraft. The financial burden of these tariffs proved overwhelming — with the aircraft's estimated market value at $55 million, the additional costs rendered any deal unfeasible.

Neither Boeing nor XiamenAir provided comments regarding the aircraft's unexpected return. It remains uncertain who ultimately decided to bring the plane back. However, experts concur that this incident highlights the disruption currently affecting the aerospace sector, which has historically been insulated from such tariffs.

The International Bureau of Aviation (IBA) noted that the unpredictability surrounding changing tariffs is hindering aircraft deliveries. Several airline executives have indicated a preference to postpone the acceptance of new planes rather than incur the substantial costs now associated with them.

What was once a smooth, tariff-free connection between manufacturers and airlines has transformed into a contentious arena — and this aircraft, now stationed in Seattle, stands as a silent testament to a trade war that continues to unfold in the skies.
