How Liverpool Could Be Crowned Champions Tonight
Can Liverpool celebrate the title today? AFPAmong the top five leagues in Europe, the French Ligue 1 has already crowned its champion—PSG, under the leadership of Luis Enrique, who secured the title with impressive dominance. Meanwhile, the English Premier League is on the cusp of naming its champion, with the outcome potentially being determined tonight as Liverpool stands on the verge of triumph.
The departure of Jurgen Klopp after the previous season raised doubts about Liverpool's prospects. Could they remain contenders for the title without the German strategist who had guided them to significant achievements? However, new manager Arne Slot has dispelled any skepticism by steering the team to an extraordinary start this season.
At one stage, Liverpool was viewed as favorites across all four competitions in which they were engaged. Nevertheless, their performance waned as the season progressed. They faced elimination in the Round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League and were ousted from the FA Cup in the fourth round. Additionally, they suffered a defeat in the League Cup final against Newcastle. Despite these challenges, Liverpool had already gained considerable momentum in the race for the Premier League title.
Fortuitously, rivals such as Arsenal and Nottingham Forest faltered, dropping vital points along the way. These missteps allowed Liverpool to maintain their position at the top. With five matches remaining, the aspiration of lifting the Premier League trophy remains very much alive and could be realized tonight.
Liverpool on the Verge of Celebration
Arsenal is set to face Ipswich Town tonight at 7:00 PM (BST). Should Arsenal lose, their points total will remain at 63 from 33 matches. Later, at 9:30 PM, Liverpool will compete against Leicester City. A victory for Liverpool would elevate their points to 79 from 33 games.
Even if Arsenal were to win all their remaining five matches after tonight, they could only achieve a maximum of 78 points. Therefore, a Liverpool victory tonight, coupled with an Arsenal defeat, would mathematically secure the title for the Reds—with five games still to play.
Even if Arsenal succeeds in defeating Ipswich, the championship race will remain decisively in Liverpool's control. In such a scenario, Liverpool would only require victories in their next two matches—against Leicester this evening and Tottenham on April 27—to clinch the title. Achieving these two wins would elevate their points total to 82, while even if Arsenal were to win all their remaining games, they would still fall short with 81 points.
No matter how the concluding weeks play out, it is evident that Liverpool's title celebration is merely a matter of time.
