Reaching the age of 70 is typically celebrated with a modest gathering, featuring a cake, a few presents, and the company of close family. However, for Don Pettit, NASA's oldest active astronaut, this significant birthday was anything but ordinary. On his 70th birthday, Pettit not only extinguished candles but also returned to Earth after an impressive 220 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

On Sunday, Don Pettit, alongside Russian cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner, successfully landed in Kazakhstan in the Soyuz MS-26 capsule. As reported by Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, the capsule touched down near the isolated Kazakh town of Dzhezkazgan at 4:20 AM Moscow time (7:20 AM Bangladesh time).

A seasoned astronaut, Pettit has dedicated 29 years to NASA and has accumulated over 18 months of experience in space through four missions. His most recent mission contributed an additional seven months to this total. Together with Ovchinin and Vagner, Pettit completed 3,520 orbits around Earth, traveling an impressive 93.3 million miles during their time in space.

NASA shared photographs documenting the trio's return to Earth. The images depict the astronauts emerging from their capsule with arms raised, welcomed by recovery teams in a remote steppe. They were carefully assisted from the spacecraft and transported to a medical tent for routine post-landing evaluations.

The journey back from the ISS lasted just over three hours—a brief duration by cosmic standards, yet a momentous return for Pettit, who marked his milestone birthday not with cake, but with the thrilling experience of re-entry and the sensation of gravity after months in orbit.
