Harvard Claims Trump Administration Intensified Pressure Following Unapproved Letter

Photo: ReutersIn an escalating conflict between higher education and the federal government, Harvard University has charged the Trump administration with increasing pressure through extensive demands, which were allegedly communicated in a letter sent without appropriate authorization.
A report from The New York Times, published on Friday, indicated that Harvard received this letter on April 11. The correspondence, which included extensive requests concerning the university's operations, was reportedly sent prior to obtaining official approval from senior officials within the Trump administration, according to unnamed sources cited by The Times.
Harvard's leadership issued a response three days after the letter's arrival, categorically rejecting the administration's stipulations. The university contended that acquiescing to such demands would effectively cede control over admissions, hiring practices, and academic governance to the federal government.
Following Harvard's rebuttal, the Trump administration intensified its position by announcing the suspension of $2.3 billion in federal funding designated for the university. Furthermore, it threatened to revoke Harvard's tax-exempt status and its capacity to enroll international students. The letter also sought comprehensive information regarding the university's international collaborations, student demographics, and faculty.
A spokesperson for Harvard remarked, “Even if the administration now attempts to withdraw its excessive demands, recent actions imply otherwise. Their conduct reflects a growing commitment to those very demands.”
Since Donald Trump began his second term, his administration has halted billions in federal funding for various universities. These actions seem to be part of a larger strategy aimed at compelling academic institutions to implement changes in their policies and governance. The administration has accused universities of inadequately addressing pro-Palestinian protests on campus and of not sufficiently combating antisemitism.

Initially, Columbia University was under the administration's scrutiny, but attention has recently shifted to Harvard. The administration has shown interest in overseeing Harvard's students, faculty, and curriculum, seemingly as part of an effort to address what it perceives as the university's "liberal bias."
As reported by The New York Times, the April 11 letter outlined an extension of earlier demands made by the administration on April 3. To maintain its federal funding, Harvard was instructed to implement measures such as prohibiting mask-wearing on campus, discontinuing diversity and inclusion programs, and enhancing collaboration with law enforcement.
The April 11 correspondence was signed by officials from the Departments of Education and Health and Human Services, along with the General Services Administration. It also included stipulations for Harvard to revoke recognition of certain pro-Palestinian organizations and to report foreign students who allegedly breached university policies to federal authorities.
The White House has not yet addressed how the unauthorized letter was disseminated. Some officials reportedly thought it was intended solely for internal distribution before its formal release.
Initially, Harvard's administration believed that ongoing discussions with federal officials could lead to a resolution. However, in light of the April 11 letter, university leaders have come to the realization that achieving a compromise may no longer be feasible.
