Gaza's Hunger Crisis Escalates Amid Israeli Blockade: A Tale of Endurance and Hardship
For more than six weeks, the residents of Gaza have found themselves ensnared in an increasingly dire humanitarian crisis. Following Israel's implementation of a complete blockade on humanitarian assistance since March 2, the area is now facing a severe food scarcity. With trucks carrying vital supplies prevented from entering, the local population is nearing the limits of survival. Children, in particular, are suffering from malnutrition, their weakened bodies serving as a poignant representation of the ongoing crisis.
In this critical situation, the Palestinian militant organization Hamas has accused Israel of weaponizing hunger as a means of warfare. In contrast, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has asserted that the blockade will persist, describing it as a necessary strategy to exert pressure on Hamas. His comments coincided with an escalation of Israeli ground operations across various regions of Gaza.

On Thursday, Al Jazeera reported that the blockade was initiated just one week before Israel resuming its military offensive in Gaza, thereby violating a previous ceasefire. On that day alone, Israeli airstrikes resulted in the deaths of 40 individuals and left 73 others injured, including at least six fatalities from an attack on the Jabalia refugee camp.
Israel’s defense chief reaffirmed that there are no intentions to lift the blockade and stated that their forces would not retreat from the buffer zones established in Gaza, even if a ceasefire is ultimately achieved. Hamas reacted strongly, accusing Israel of openly acknowledging its war crimes. In a message posted on Telegram, the group claimed that Israel is systematically denying innocent civilians access to essential resources such as food, medicine, water, and fuel.
The United Nations has reiterated these alarming issues. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has painted a grim picture: acute food shortages and escalating child malnutrition. Their findings indicate that essential nutritious foods—such as meat, poultry, dairy, vegetables, and fruits—are virtually absent in Gaza. In March alone, 3,699 malnourished children were admitted to hospitals, a significant rise from 2,027 cases reported in February. Additionally, access to clean water is critically limited.
As the situation deteriorates, Palestinians are observing "Prisoners Day," which serves as a poignant reminder of another dimension of their plight. Prior to the onset of Israel’s military operations on October 7, 2023, approximately 5,250 Palestinians were incarcerated in Israeli prisons, including 40 women and 170 children. By April 2025, this figure has surged to nearly 9,900 detainees, comprising 27 women and at least 400 children. Since the conflict began, 64 Palestinian prisoners have lost their lives while in Israeli custody.

Global responses to Israel’s actions are escalating. Germany has cautioned Israel against the prospect of a permanent occupation of Gaza. This warning followed remarks from Defense Minister Katz, who suggested that Israeli forces might remain indefinitely in what he termed a “security zone.” Concurrently, North Korea has accused Israel of attempting to annex Gaza and has condemned the renewed military operations in the area. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) has issued a strong denunciation of Israel’s conduct.
As the international community observes, Gaza continues to suffer from relentless attacks, increasing hunger, and the stifling effects of isolation. Amid the devastation and the silence of empty plates, a humanitarian disaster is unfolding—one that urgently requires global attention and decisive action.
